Diseases in Dogs and Cats During the Summer Season

Summer is here, and while it brings fun in the sun, it also increases the risk of certain diseases for our beloved pets. It’s important to be aware of these common diseases that can affect dogs and cats during this season to keep them safe and healthy. Here are some key tips to care for your furry friends during the summer.

  • Heatstroke
Heatstroke is a serious threat in summer. Dogs and cats can suffer from overheating due to high temperatures. To prevent it, make sure your pets have constant access to fresh water and a cool place to rest. Additionally, avoid exercise during the hottest parts of the day. If you notice your pet panting excessively, is lethargic, or shows signs of distress, seek veterinary attention immediately.
  • Parasite Prevention
The heat increases the activity of ticks, fleas, and mosquitoes, which can transmit serious diseases such as Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and heartworm. Use repellent products recommended by your veterinarian and perform regular checks to detect and remove parasites. Ensure your pet is up to date with their vaccinations and parasite treatments.
  • Sunburn and Respiratory Issues
Pets with light skin or little fur are more prone to sunburn. To protect them, limit their exposure to intense sunlight and consider using pet-safe sunscreen. Additionally, brachycephalic dogs (such as bulldogs and pugs) are more susceptible to respiratory issues during the heat. Avoid excessive exercise during hot hours and keep them in cool areas.
  • Food Poisoning
With barbecues and picnics outdoors, the risk of pets ingesting toxic foods like chocolate, onions, grapes, and alcohol increases. Keep food out of their reach and ensure they only consume pet-appropriate food.
